Pregnancy seems like an exciting play for new mothers but it’s not just all about dreaming! To be honest, it is a tough process especially for women who are obese or overweight. If you are overweight then you are more likely to face certain medical problem than an average pregnant woman.

More overweight, Higher Risk

Overweight women can face ‘n’ number of problems before, after and during pregnancy. Some of them include:

  • Infertility. This is a proven fact. Overweight makes you infertile. If you are planning to conceive, you can do nothing but keep a check on your weight.
  • Miscarriage. This is often seen in overweight women.
  • Stillbirth. Baby dies inside the womb of an obese/overweight mother after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Diabetes. More likely to be seen in overweight women than normal pregnant mothers.
  • Labor and birth complications. This can be fatal if a relatively large baby is developed inside overweight women. This leads to c-section or caesarean.
  • Preeclampsia. High blood pressure at the time of delivery leads even to casual death of mother and child.

It is unlike that average weight women don’t face these complications but these are much prevalent in case of overweight women. Therefore, if you are overweight you need to keep a check on your weight when you are pregnant.

Dietary advice and diet plan for overweight pregnant woman

It is seen that people tend to feed their pregnant ladies with extra rich food which comes as savour for our fatty food lover ladies. Feeding pregnant woman with rich food making her develop weight issues and providing her the right nutritional requirement to make her strong for delivering a baby are two different things. It is a myth that feeding pregnant mothers with rich food will give her strength. In order to accumulate strength for delivery time, all a women need is a balanced diet and a right caloric nutrition, absence of which may lead to pregnancy complications.

Calorie requirement for overweight women

For all, overweight and normal women, the estimated average requirement (EAR) for energy includes an additional two hundred Kilo Calories in the third trimester. Usually overweight women who has BMI (Body Mass Index) over 30 consumes the recommended amount and they do not need extra calories. But the ratio remains same, 200 kcal is mandatory for an overweight as well as normal pregnant woman.

An overweight woman needs to be more careful about her diet during pregnancy. She is likely to gain more weight in the course. Therefore, it is mandatory in her case to have meals planned by a nutritionist instead of following traditional approach. Overweight in itself is a problem and pregnancy on the top of it adds to bigger complications if you miss even minute details. Your diet has to be balanced. Unlike normal weight women, you can’t eat anything at anytime no matter how hard you crave for it.

  • You are advised to take limited fats and oils which can nourish the foetus.
  • Your body should consume a minimum count of fats and oils.
  • Rich food shouldn’t savour you.
  • Avoid high sugar foods, chocolates, sweets, cakes etc. else this will be an add-on to your weight.
